Almost every large company and every large public authority operates development and test environments in their data centres. These development and test environments - called "non-production environments" in Microsoft's licensing language - can alternatively be licensed with so-called developer licences (Visual Studio subscriptions). The use of these developer licences can be much more economical than production licensing with volume licences. However, it is linked to a large number of conditions and requirements that very few IT managers and software asset managers are likely to be aware of. This training addresses precisely these little-known conditions and requirements and also provides information on the many possible "pitfalls" associated with this type of licensing. In addition, concrete case studies will be used to calculate licensing scenarios for development and test environments, which will show participants how to make cost-effective licensing decisions.

Definition: what is a "non-production" environment?

  • Legal uses of developer licences
  • Licence metrics and licence editions of developer licences
  • Licensing of external developers
  • Distribution channels of developer licences
  • Upgrade and downgrade options
  • Introduction to the Visual Studio Portal
  • "Pitfalls" in developer licensing
  • Product keys and installations from the Visual Studio subscription
  • Can you run production and non-production together on a virtual level?
  • Special usage rights and other benefits for subscriptions (VS in Azure, Office Pro. Plus etc...)
  • Management of development and test environments (with System Center)
  • In which cases no developer licences are required
  • When additional licences are required
  • What rights do I retain when I cancel my Visual Studio subscription?
  • Azure DevOps Server licensing
  • Concrete calculation examples: Cost-effectiveness of production licensing vs. developer licensing

What added value (for you) can you expect?

The licensing of development and test environments affects almost every company, but to date there are no training courses on the market on this important topic that deal in depth with the challenges and opportunities of this alternative licensing. Knowledge of the possibilities and limitations of developer licences in non-production environments can bring significant cost benefits for your company.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to send printed training materials to Switzerland and other non-EU countries for customs reasons.

All classroom training courses are generally equipped with printed training documents (paper - included in the course price). If you would like additional digital training material via Mimeo, you can order this for € 24 net via the registration form.

For face-to-face courses, refreshments during breaks (drinks, pastries and lunch) are included in the course price.
